Vernon Hills
Today was the Vernon Hills Grand Prix and I was somewhat reluctant about my form since I have barely raced this year. However, being the old man helping the young guys has it's advantages in such situations. Last year I got second at this race to Ryan Freund and since he's my teammate now I don't have to worry about him.
At the meeting we decided I would cover everything early so the other guys could loosen up. I had no idea early would mean from the gun. I forgot how bad that can hurt, at one point my face was tingling from either lack of oxygen or lactic acid, not sure which. From there on I tried to stay at the front and help the guys. Once a group got away it was pretty easy just policing the front and preventing guys from bridging. In the Waylon won out of a group of six with Will taking third. I realized how little race speed I had on the last lap when everyone started sprinting for nothing and I went out the back. It was a great day, I love racing and seeing the young guys win, it is really fun.
On a side note there is a really annoying trend in racing these days: promoters not putting directions on their fliers, or anywhere for that matter. For today there was just an address for the high school by the course. So obviously we all just put it in google maps, mapquest, our smart phones or gps units and we go. Oh wait, those directions take you to a closed road, which is no big deal if you have a gps and can navigate your way to he race, but the organizer knows the road will be closed! So organizers, just some simple directions to help avoid the roadblocks would be nice. That is all.
